The story behind this meme
"Harold" is really Andras Arato, a retired Hungarian engineer who posed for stock photos in the 2000s. Behind his forced smile sits visible misery, and once internet users found the pictures in the 2010s, Hide the Pain Harold was born. He has since embraced the fame, giving interviews and smiling on command. The template is a masterclass in one emotion: the top box sets up a situation you chose, and the bottom box reveals the quiet regret underneath. It fits any moment where you keep smiling while something inside you slowly gives up.

Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
Harold's face reads clearly even from the back of a classroom, and the content stays clean. Teachers use him to teach the difference between what people say and what they feel, which fits lessons on emotions, acting, and unreliable narrators. Students can also caption him with historical figures pretending everything is under control, then discuss what the smile hides.
