The story behind this meme
A teen in a sideways cap and fur-lined vest stands with arms crossed, radiating borrowed confidence. The yearbook-style photo became Scumbag Steve in 2011, the internet's mascot for friends who borrow and never return. The format is classic advice-meme architecture: the top line sets up his opportunity, the bottom line reveals the scummy move. Everything is fair game — eating your fries, borrowing your charger, ghosting the group chat. The vest survives every accusation, which is part of the joke. Twenty years of internet later, he still owes everybody a charger.

- School life: "Can I copy your notes?" / Returns them with doodles included
- Money: "Just five bucks till Friday" / Sees him Friday: "For what?"
- Tech: Borrows your charger / Returns it at four percent
Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
The photo is a real person, so keep captions about generic behavior, never personal attacks. Teachers use it for etiquette and responsibility lessons — what makes a good group member or friend. Students rewrite each caption as the "good friend" version, and the contrast teaches itself. The rewrite is the real assignment.
