The story behind this meme
Few meme formats reward overthinking like this one. Expanding Brain began as a four-panel joke about enlightenment levels around 2017, and it quickly became the internet's favorite ladder of absurdity. Each panel shows a bigger, brighter brain, so the joke climbs from a normal idea to a galaxy-brain conclusion that makes no practical sense at all. That staircase structure is the whole point: use it whenever you want to mock an escalation, rank choices from sensible to ridiculous, or celebrate a terrible shortcut that secretly feels genius.

Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
Because the four panels form a clear sequence, this template is perfect for teaching ranking and escalation. Students can order events from a story, arrange causes from least to most important, or turn a lab conclusion into four steps of confidence. The humor keeps reluctant writers engaged, and teachers can ask for a fifth panel to push critical thinking further.
