The story behind this meme
Few yearbook photos have traveled further than Brian's. In 2012, a school picture of a braces-wearing teen in a plaid vest surfaced online, and users turned his awkward grin into Bad Luck Brian, the unluckiest kid alive. The format is classic two-line storytelling: the top line sets up hope, the bottom line demolishes it with spectacular misfortune. Brian loses phones, pets, scholarships, and eyebrows in every retelling. Use the template whenever life hands out pain so perfectly timed that it loops back around to comedy.

- Money: Found twenty dollars on the ground / It was my own twenty
- School life: Raised my hand to answer / Forgot the question mid-sentence
Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
The joke stays clean because the misfortune is cartoon-level exaggeration. It is a great tool for narrative writing: students invent an unlucky day and chart cause and effect. Math classes have used it for probability scenarios, and language classes can practice the past tense with Brian's endless disasters. Brian teaches sequencing: first the hope, then the disaster, then the laugh.
