The story behind this meme
Charles Dickens wrote the scene in 1838: a small orphan in a workhouse raises his empty bowl and asks, politely and fatally, for more. The request scandalizes the officials and has been scandalizing fictional authority figures ever since. As a meme, 'please, sir, may I have some more' serves anyone asking for a modest increase from an entity prepared to offer none: napkins, vacation days, the good pencil from the supply cabinet. Two boxes hold the bowl: the humble request on top, the institution's reaction below.
Caption ideas
- Work: May I have a small raise, please / The board gasps. The fainting begins.
- School life: Please, may we have less homework / The teacher clutches the lesson plan
- Money: Bank: one more cookie from the jar of savings / The cookie jar: scandalized
Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
Straight from a classic novel, entirely safe, and a discussion machine. Teachers use it to explore power, politeness, and how literature critiques institutions: who gets to ask for more, and who is punished for asking. Students write their own 'more' requests across history or fiction. It also gently boosts negotiation vocabulary.
