The story behind this meme
Somewhere between sports fandom and pure spite lies a third emotion, and this template gives it a home. The quote format declares that victory is optional, even meaningless, as long as one specific rival fails. The internet adopted it for rivalries far below the level of actual sports: group projects, neighboring coffee shops, siblings, and software competing for the same outlet. The top box performs the gracious indifference about winning, and the bottom box confesses the true, petty requirement. It is honesty about a feeling everyone pretends not to have, which is why it travels so well.
