The story behind this meme
In 2015 a network news anchor's story about riding in a helicopter hit by enemy fire unraveled under fact-checking, and the internet responded with its favorite medicine: photoshop. Suddenly the anchor appeared, grinning, at every historical photograph ever taken - the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Moses parting the sea. 'Was there' became a verb. This template continues the tradition: insert the smiling journalist into any scene he could not possibly have witnessed. Two boxes caption the appearance: the historic moment, the eyewitness no one invited.
Caption ideas
- School life: The class photo from 1987 / Was that... our principal in the back row?
- Money: The first dollar the store ever earned / Somehow framed above the register: him
- Work: The office opened in 2012 / Interview question: weren't you at the founding?
Classroom-safe & how teachers use it
Because the source is a real journalism ethics story, teachers should keep captions focused on the past or on fiction, not on mocking the individual today. It opens excellent media-literacy lessons: credibility, verification, and how trust is rebuilt. Students insert a fictional character into history and then fact-check the claim. Humor with a bibliography.
